Does Online Therapy Really Work? What New Jersey Clients Should Know
Telehealth · New Jersey Does Online Therapy Really Work? What New Jersey Clients Should Know Long waitlists, tight schedules, and the drive to an office keep a lot of New Jersey residents from getting support. Online therapy removes those barriers — but is it as effective as sitting in the room with a therapist? Here’s what the research shows, who telehealth fits best, and what to expect. Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy? For most people and most common concerns, the research says yes. Online therapy — also called telehealth, teletherapy, or virtual counseling — means meeting a licensed therapist by secure video instead of in an office. The clinician, the approach, and the goals are the same. The strongest evidence comes from a 2023 meta-analysis in the British Journal of Psychiatry that pooled 32 randomized controlled trials covering 3,592 participants across 11 mental health conditions. Overall, it found no significant difference in symptom improvement between treatment delivered by video and face-to-face treatment. The honest nuance: results varied by condition. Video-based care performed as well as or better than in-person care for depression, while a small number of studies favored in-person care for certain concerns. That’s why we talk through fit at the start rather than assuming one format works for everyone. Source: Hagi K, et al. Telepsychiatry versus face-to-face treatment: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials. Br J Psychiatry. 2023;223(3):407–414. Online or in-person: which is the better fit? Neither format is “better” across the board. The right choice depends on your schedule, your comfort level, and what you’re working through.
